right on that rain/snow line. this one could be much more impactful for the northeast cities than storm number two, the one we're dealing with right now. >> jim, thanks. >>> to the best, this same huge winter system is blanketing several states with snow and it's on its way to the northeast over the next few days. weather channel meteorologist mike seidel is in oklahoma city this evening. >> reporter: on this christmas night, a massive storm is causing travel headaches for millions producing and dumping snow as far south as texas late this afternoon and still putting down rare christmas tornadoes in the deep south. look at this rain and wind. this is storm chaser video near mcneal, mississippi, where a tornado reportedly touched down this afternoon. there are reports of injuries and damage. and there is a rare christmas snowfall hitting dallas. it's bad news on the roads, signs warning of icy conditions. at least three reported tornadoes touched down across texas today causing lots of damage and leaving thousands without power. thunderstorm winds toppled this tree onto a pick-up truck i

west coast which will bring a stripe of snow from oklahoma city to the midwest by christmas before heading up to the northeast mid week with coastal cities getting mostly rain and those inland either snow or a mix. so after a very mild winter last year, a whole lot of action in the last week. lester? >> all right. scott newell checking in for us. thanks. now to the mad rush at airports across the country tonight. nbc's gabe gutierrez is at the world's busiest airport hartsfield jackson in atlanta. how is it looking? >> reporter: well, major airports caught a bit of a break today. nowhere near as many cancellations as we saw thursday and friday. instead this morning rain slowed down some flights in san francisco and up in the northeast there were some minor travel headaches as well as winds delayed flights from washington and the new york area. a lot of people were paying attention to weather reports today. nearly one in four americans will travel this holiday taking advantage of a longer break with both christmas and new year's falling on a tuesday. and this is good news for the 84

. during the day, moving into philadelphia, new york city and then into connecticut and boston by the evening. some of this blue in here, as the storm intensifies, that blue indicates some of the heavier snow. when it's all said and done, we're going to see several inches of snow in some spots. but it's going to be a fast-mover. by tomorrow night, this storm really wrapping up. here's a look at some of the totals. now, the big cities anywhere from about 1 to 4 inches of snow. that includes the airports there and with that, we'll see visibilities go down. and that will lead to travel delays at the major airports, cold air is going to be here, natalie, and that's going to linger around throughout much of the week. >> chris warren at the weather channel. thanks so much, chris. >>> the holiday season is bringing heartbreak to some prospective parents here in the u.s. in the process of adopting children from russia. president vladimir putin has signed a new law banning those adoptions, leaving shocked adults and children wondering what will happen next. here is nbc's kerry sanders. >>

tonight in kansas city, missouri, and across much of the football world after a horrible tragedy that has left an nfl star player and his girlfriend dead in an apparent murder-suicide. police say kansas city chiefs linebacker jovan belcher shot the 22-year-old woman before he headed to the stadium he was expected to play in tomorrow afternoon. it was there he turned the gun on himself. thanh truong joins us from arrowhead stadium in kansas city. good evening. >> reporter: good evening to you. arrowhead stadium is a symbol of pride for this city and the kansas city chiefs but there is a lot of sorrow here right now after a deadly day ended not far from where i'm standing. shortly before 8:00 this morning, gunfire erupted at this kansas city suburban home. >> when we arrived, a lady came out and said her daughter had been shot by her boyfriend several times inside the residence. we went in the residence. she was taken to the local hospital where she died a short time later. >> reporter: just ten minutes later at arrowhead stadium a man with a gun. >> we got a call at the arrowhead stadi

cities today issued an open letter calling on congress and the president to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. and to strengthen the national background check system, eliminating gun show loopholes. the nation's largest police union also came out in support of a new assault weapons ban. but while some influential democrats are speaking out in support of a gun law, today the first signs of opposition from republicans. >> we did have an assault weapons ban for ten years. the crime rate was going down before it. the crime rate when it was lifted continued to go down. >> reporter: the nra is promising a news conference on friday. meanwhile in michigan, the republican governor today vetoed a bill that would have allowed concealed weapons at churches and at schools. brian? >> tom costello our d.c. news room. >>> meanwhile in newtown, four days now after this tragedy at the elementary school, this was the day the rest of the town schools reopened. and kids returned to class, even as others were being laid to rest. nbc's anne thompson remains in newtown for us tonight. anne, good e

continue. we have the latest from london. >> we want justice! >> reporter: in cities across the country today indians took to the streets demanding justice for one woman and greater respect for all others. the 23-year-old was gang raped and beaten and then attacked and it started a national debate about the abuse of women. last night she died in a singapore hospital where she was taken for emergency treatment. >> she seccumbed to her injuries because the scale of those injuries was very grave. >> reporter: the medical student was on this bus in new delhi with a male friend when she was attacked by six men using an iron rod. both were stripped and thrown on to the road. it triggered violent protests across india where sexual assaults against women are increasing. in july a student was filmed being viciously attacked while a crowd watched on. even young girls are learning self-defense while praying for change. >> it deepens our determination to battle the pervasive, shameful social attitudes and mindsets that allow men to rape and molest women and girls with such impunity. >> repo
